The trial of Imamoglu on charges of intimidating the Prosecutor in Istanbul news


Istanbul municipality, the opposition municipality, Akram Imamoglu, was imprisoned since late March on charges of “corruption”, today, Monday, before a court in Istanbul after being accused of trying to intimidate the city’s public prosecutor.

Imamoglu security personnel, the most prominent opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, took the courtroom amid applause from him, according to Turkish media.

Last April, the Imam ofoglu appeared before the same court of Silveri prison in Istanbul, where he has been arrested, as part of a case different from the one that led to his detention.

Imamoglu, who publicly questioned last January of the integrity of the Prosecutor in Istanbul, Akin Gorlik, who was formerly Deputy Minister of Justice, accused of slander, defamation and attempt to intimidate.

According to the local media, Imamoglu, one of the most prominent faces of the Republican People’s Party, faces the largest Turkish opposition forces, a prison sentence of up to 7 years and 9 months, and is deprived of candidacy for the presidential elections due to lack of eligibility.

The mayor of Istanbul arrested at dawn March 19 at his home with suspicions of “corruption” and “terrorism” and was placed in the pre -trial prison.

The arrest of Imamoglu, who was elected head of the largest Turkish cities in 2019 and was re -elected in 2024, sparked unprecedented wave of demonstrations in Türkiye since 2013.
