The Pentagon reveals the reason for not providing Ukraine with cluster bombs
The Pentagon revealed Friday that Washington will not provide Advanced dual-use weapons to Kiev.
supply restrictions
Laura Cooper, the US deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine, and Eurasia, said the United States does not provide advanced dual-use weapons to Ukraine to not contravene cluster bomb supply restrictions.
“The reason these capabilities are not provided is related to constraints imposed by Congress and concerns about Allied unity,” she explained.
Proposal from a European country
And last January, a European country proposed sending cluster munitions to Ukraine, believing that this type of controversial weapon could help Ukrainian forces on the battlefield.
The European official, who did not wish to reveal his identity and the name of his country, said that his government approved the shipment, and was working to obtain permission from Germany, which participated in the production of these munitions. According to what was reported by AFP at the time.
Ban the use of cluster bombs
It is noteworthy that a UN treaty supported by most Western countries bans the use and transfer of cluster bombs, which disperse a large number of explosive submunitions, and often pose a threat long after conflicts have ended.
While Russia did not sign this treaty, the United Nations had previously expressed concern about Moscow’s use of cluster munitions in populated areas in Ukraine last year.
