For depriving girls of education… European sanctions affect the Taliban

On Thursday evening, the Council of the European Union imposed new sanctions on a number of Senior officials of the Taliban government.

The council issued a statement saying that it had imposed sanctions on the Chief Justice of the Taliban, Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the Minister of Justice, Abdul Hakim Sharia, and the Acting Minister of Education of the Taliban, Mawlawi Habibullah Agha, for their role in depriving girls of education and equal rights with men, according to what was reported by the Afghan “Bachter” agency.

The council also said it had placed 18 individuals, including members of the Taliban, and five entities under sanctions for their responsibility for gross human rights violations in Afghanistan, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Ukraine and Russia.

The European Union said that in the countries mentioned, civilians are systematically subjected to sexual violence, and that individuals sanctioned use restrictions as a tool to spread terror.

Afghan women from Kabul

tighten hand restraints

A report issued by the United Nations on the situation of human rights, issued on Monday, revealed that the Taliban government has tightened restrictions imposed on women and girls in Afghanistan in recent months, especially with regard to their continuation of education and other jobs.

Despite initial promises of more moderate rule, the Taliban have imposed harsh measures since seizing power in Afghanistan in August 2021. The movement banned women from entering public spaces, such as parks and gyms, and cracked down on media freedoms.

The measures have sparked an international outcry, further isolating Kabul at a time when its economy is collapsing and a humanitarian crisis is underway.
