Officials and sources at Aden International Airport said that at least eight people, including passengers and airport employees, were injured in a thunderstorm that hit the port city of Aden in southern Yemen at dawn today, Monday, and caused severe damage to the airport building.
Abdul Raqeeb Al-Omari, director of Aden Airport, told Reuters that six passengers and two airport employees were injured, one of them seriously, due to the storm resulting from the effects of an air depression in the Arabian Sea.
Al-Omari confirmed that the storm caused severe damage to the ceilings of the terminals and the glass facades of the airport and one of the fire engines, in addition to the destruction of part of the airport wall and damage to two Yemenia Airlines planes.
For his part, Abdulsalam Hamid, Minister of Transport in the Yemeni internationally recognized government, said that air traffic at Aden International Airport continues and operates normally.
And the government news agency, Saba, stated that the damage affected “the ceilings of the halls, the windows of the airport’s facades, and one of the fire engines, and part of the airport wall was demolished, in addition to the damage to two Yemenia Airlines planes.”
