Trump news today: Trump ramps up attacks on indictment at New Hampshire rally as lawyers ignore judge’s orders

Judge Tanya Chutkan has set a hearing date over a proposed protective order that would limit what Donald Trump can share in the case against him involving his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

The parties will convene at 10 am ET on 11 August.

In his appearance on Fox News, Hannity pressed Mr McCarthy to say outright that Mr Biden engaged in influence peddling — rehashing a long-discredited claim that Mr Biden used his office as vice president to fire a Ukrainian prosecutor who was supposedly investigating an energy company whose board Hunter Biden served on. In fact, Mr Biden and European allies were leveraging aid to Ukraine to help oust the prosecutor as part of broader anti-corruption efforts in the country. The prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, was not investigating the company, Burisma.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has replaced his campaign manager as he struggles to gain traction in his attempt to take down former President Donald Trump in the fight for the Republican presidential nomination.

Campaign Manager Generra Peck will now instead move to the role of chief strategist with James Uthmeier taking the top post, according to The Messenger.

Mr Uthmeier previously held the position of chief of staff in the governor’s office. The shakeup comes not long after the campaign said that Ms Peck’s position was secure. She was in charge of Mr DeSantis’s successful 2022 reelection campaign in Florida but has been criticised by advisers to the governor as well as donors after the campaign began to stumble and funding started to run out.

The campaign has had two rounds of staff and expenses cuts and a revamp of its media strategy to make the governor more available to mainstream outlets.

A number of donors and advisers outside the campaign remained unsatisfied, prompting Mr DeSantis to ask Mr Uthmeier last week if he could analyse what issues may be plaguing the campaign and how they may be solved, leading to his hiring as campaign manager.

A federal judge in Texas has ordered attorneys for Southwest Airlines to take “religious-liberty training” from an influential right-wing Christian legal group behind anti-abortion policies and litigation targeting LGBT+ rights.

US District Judge Brantley Starr – a member of the Federalist Society who was appointed to the bench by Donald Trump in 2019 – issued additional sanctions in an employment law case on 7 August that directs the airline’s lawyers to take eight hours of instruction from Alliance Defending Freedom, which is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The group is among “esteemed non-profit organizations that are dedicated to preserving free speech and religious freedom,” according to the judge’s order, first reported by Chris Geidner.

While Alliance Defending Freedom promotes “religious freedom” principles, the group has played a critical role in legal efforts to incorporate Christianity into government, schools and public life. At the Supreme Court, the group supported the legal effort to overturn Roe v Wade and litigated a case in front of the justices to argue that a website designer has a First Amendment right to reject LGBT+ couples. The group is currently leading efforts to block the federal government’s long-standing approval of a widely used abortion drug.

But Alliance Defending Freedom is not involved in this case, and it is unclear why the judge specifically recommended the group. The woman who sued Southwest did not make any request that its employees undergo “religious liberty” training.

Former Gov Chris Christie is spelling out what he believed was truly Donald Trump’s biggest problem as the criminal trial of the former president for his attempt to overturn the 2020 election looms.

Speaking Monday on CNN, the former New Jersey governor and current 2024 candidate for president reiterated his belief the Department of Justice’s special counsel had been able to charge Mr Trump with four criminal counts related to those efforts thanks to the cooperation of Mark Meadows, Mr Trump’s former and final chief of staff.

Mr Meadows is known to have testified to the grand jury in some manner: CNN reported in June that the former White House chief of staff had made at least one appearance before the panel summoned by special counsel Jack Smith in Washington. What remains unknown is the extent, if any, of Mr Meadows’ cooperation with the DoJ investigation.

“I’ve said all along I think Mark Meadows is already a cooperating witness,” Mr Christie said in his latest interview. “He has all the looks of a cooperating witness, running into coffee shops away from the press.”

A former Donald Trump-linked attorney and one of the chief architects of a scheme to overturn the 2020 election has asked to postpone his disbarment hearings as he anticipates criminal charges connected to the former president’s latest indictment.

An 11-count complaint from the chief trial counsel of the State Bar of California alleges that John Eastman “engaged in a course of conduct to plan, promote, and assist” Mr Trump “in executing a strategy, unsupported by facts or law, to overturn the legitimate results” of the 2020 presidential election.

The former president has pleaded not guilty to three criminal conspiracies and obstruction of the certification of Joe Biden’s victory, outlined in an indictment that alleges a multi-state effort to obstruct the electoral count in states Mr Trump lost by replacing electors with so-called “alternates” loyal to him.

“[R]ecent developments in the investigation have renewed and intensified [Mr Eastman’s] concerns that the federal government might bring charges against him,” his attorneys wrote in a recent filing.

Mike Pence’s former national security adviser slammed the ex-vice president as “unworthy of the presidency” as he endorsed former president Donald Trump.

Retired Gen Keith Kellogg put out a statement on Truth Social, Mr Trump’s social networking platform, expressing his dissatisfaction with Mr Pence’s actions towards the former president.

“While I respect his service to our Nation, I must express my disappointment in his recent actions regarding President Trump,” he said in his statement. “Where President Trump is bold and unafraid to challenge the status quo, Pence has often chosen the passive route, avoiding confrontation.”

Specifically, Gen Kellogg faulted Mr Pence’s adviser and former chief of staff Marc Short and said Mr Pence displayed a “laissez-faire style unworthy of the presidency.”
