The gunman that opened fire in a Georgia high school – killing four people – has been identified as a 14-year-old student at the school.
Colt Gray, surrendered to authorities on Wednesday and was taken into custody. He will be charged with murder and tried as an adult, according to police.
During the rampage at the Apalachee High School, two students and two teachers were killed, according to Chris Hosey, director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Nine other individuals have been taken to local hospitals for treatment, having been shot “in some capacity.”
Special education teacher David Phenix and 14-year-old student Mason Schermerhorn have been identified by family members as among the victims.
In May 2023, the FBI probed online threats to commit a school shooting that could be traced back to Gray, prompting local police to interview him and his father, who disclosed having hunting guns in the house. No arrests were made at the time.
Helicopter video from local news channel WSB-TV showed dozens of law enforcement and emergency vehicles surrounding the school in Barrow County, about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith described the incident as “evil” but vowed that “hate will not prevail in this county.”
Kamala Harris described the shooting as “a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies” as she addressed supporters in New Hampshire on Wednesday.
Republican congressman blasted for saying not all injuries at Apalachee High were ‘gun-related’
Republican congressman Mike Collins, known for his heavily pro-gun stance, has been blasted online after posting that “not-all” of those wounded in the incident were injured by firearms.
“Very sad to confirm there have been four fatalities from the shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, GA. Many others wounded, but not all gun-related or life-threatening injuries, some from efforts to flee danger,” he wrote.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith earlier told reporters that all nine of those injured were shot “in some capacity.” Four others were killed.

The FBI says that it investigated Georgia shooting suspect Colt Gray for allegedly making online threats of in May 2023.
The Bureau’s Atlanta office put out a statement confirming an investigation was carried out after photos of guns were posted online.
The suspect, who was then 13, was found by Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies and interviewed, according to the FBI.
His father told investigators that the family had hunting guns in the house but that the teenager did not have “unsupervised access” to them.
