The United Nations announces the formation of an expert committee to facilitate the holding of the Libyan elections news
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya “Oncelil” announced today, Tuesday, the formation of a consulting committee whose mission is to help hold the desired presidential and parliamentary elections, by resolving differences in this regard between the political parties.
The formation of this committee, consisting of Libyan experts, comes as part of a political initiative announced by “Onsel” during a briefing before the Security Council on December 16, 2024.
And “Oncelil”, in a statement today, said that “the task of the advisory committee is to submit appropriate and political applicable proposals to solve the outstanding contentious issues, which helps in holding the elections.”
She pointed out that these proposals will be based on legal references, including the Libyan political agreement signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat in 2015, and the road map of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, which was approved in the city of Geneva in 2021, in addition to the laws of the (6+6) election committee.
On June 6, 2023, the committee (6+6), which was issued on June 6, 2023, during discussions in the Moroccan city of Bouznika, the electoral laws, but some of the provisions of these laws faced opposition from Libyan political parties.
Meetings
Onselel reported that the members of the committee were chosen based on criteria that include professionalism and experience in legal and constitutional issues and elections, with the ability to achieve political compatibility and understand the political challenges facing Libya.
She emphasized that the committee is not a committee to make decisions or a meeting place for dialogue, but rather operates under a specific time ceiling (which it did not clarify), and it is expected that its duties will be accomplished within a short period.
The committee will provide the results of its work to the United Nations Mission, which will in turn facilitate communication with the relevant Libyan institutions to follow up on the political process.
The mission announced that the committee will hold its first meeting next week in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
This step comes within efforts aimed at paving the way for elections seeking to resolve the crisis of the conflict between two competing governments in Libya. The first is the internationally recognized national unity government headed by Abdel Hamid Al -Duba, based in Tripoli, and runs the west of the country.
The second is the government charged with the House of Representatives headed by Osama Hammad, based in the city of Benghazi, and controls the east of the country and most of the southern regions.
The Libyans hope that the upcoming elections will contribute to ending the political and armed conflict, and put an end to the transitional periods that the country has been experiencing since the overthrow of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011.
