Syrian artist Jamal Suleiman tells about himself and “the difficult days of the days” Varieties


The artist Jamal Suleiman began his life in the winter of 1958 in one of the oldest neighborhoods of the Syrian capital, Damascus, and lived a stage of major transformations in Syria and abroad, describing himself as “the children of instability.”

In his narration of his story in the 3/23/25/31 episode of the “My Story” program, Suleiman explained that he was born in a period of great transformations inside and outside Syria, and he sees that these transformations affected him and his generation, which describes him as “children of instability”, because whenever they felt to build something that was destroyed on them.

The June 1967 setback affected the morale of Suleiman and his generation, and he says that he touched the great impact of this defeat on his mother and father, who was a fighter in the Socialist Baath Party, but he saw in his life only defeat and the absence of justice.

With his feeling that his dreams in life are inability, Suleiman’s father decided that his eldest son would do this on his behalf, which he put under great pressure because of this patriarchal “exaggeration”.

Therefore, Suleiman left his family’s house early and he was sleeping in the gardens until he joined a job in one of the presses that he was sleeping inside as well, which helped him to read in various fields.

In addition to this case, Suleiman loved the theater and acting, which prevented his superiority in education, which made his father feel that his project also failed as socialism and Arab unity failed.

But these bitter tragedies and experiences that Solomon lived had a role without a doubt in his polishing and reaching him to the success he reached in the art world, he says.

Suleiman considers that his success in the play “A Song on the Corridor” by the Egyptian writer Ali Salem, in the late 1960s, was a factor in his decision to be an representative after he read his name in the newspapers and touched a beautiful reception from the masses for him.

At this time, a high institute of theatrical arts was opened in Syria and then became a student in this institute very short of his decision to go to acting.

In August 1988, Suleiman obtained a master’s degree in theater directing from the University of Leeds, then returning to Damascus as a teacher at the Institute of Performing Arts. Hala Imran – who was a student with him – says he was very strict.

Solomon did not deny this issue, and he says that teaching for actors makes you contact with them at all cultural, psychological, moral and religious levels, which means that it will deal with everything that is noble and everything that is lost in it.

At this time, Suleiman believed in his pension from his work on radio and television because he did not get a material compensation from the institute, but after about 14 years he decided to devote himself to acting when he felt that the institute had changed “and no longer resembles him.”

After a set of films and simple series, Suleiman participated in the series “The Display of a Man”, which achieved great success in Syria, he said.

Suleiman worked in a number of important series by the late Syrian director Hatem Ali, who says that he went beyond his predecessors to directing, as he played roles in the spring of Cordoba, kings of sects, Palestinian alienation and others.

Suleiman feels success when a young man stops him and talks to him about any of his roles in these works that are more than the age of these young people.

It is believed that one of the most difficult types of struggle is to pay attention to the issues of the homeland, society and the poor, and to defend the struggle of people against poverty, insult and injustice.

Suleiman was linked to the popular “Al -Rawda” cafe in Damascus, which he says was the forum of artists and actors and that he witnessed the birth of many ideas and signing many contracts.

But he says that when he asks his friends present in Damascus about the cafe, they tell him that he has changed and that people are no longer the people who were sitting on him.

Despite his great success in Egypt, Suleiman confirms that he was not planning to move to it professionally, but he was forced to do so after a dialogue after the assassination of the Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Al -Lebanese.

In this dialogue, Suleiman says that he talked about the need for the Syrian Baath Party to abandon the political guardianship of Lebanon, and after that his phone no longer received any call to participate in any work.

Transfer to Egypt

In the midst of this crisis, Suleiman received an offer from the Egyptian director Ismail Abdel Hafez, who is offered to participate in the series “The Gardens of the Devil”, which represented his artistic launch in Egypt.

Suleiman was hesitant to participate in this series, and he did not feel that he would find himself in this type of drama, yet the work achieved a resounding success and was a reason for opening the door for many Arab actors to participate in Egyptian works.

Suleiman believes that the Syrian revolution would not have erupted without the Egyptian revolution, and this crowd that gathered in Tahrir Square. He says he received a call telling him that the regime against the demonstrators in Daraa is unacceptable.

Suleiman issued – as part of a group of artists – a statement presenting a proposal to contain what is happening in Syria, but this statement was met with severe rejection from the regime of Bashar al -Assad.

Suleiman was intimidated and threatened, until the Syrian security stormed his home in 2012 and destroyed it completely. Therefore, Suleiman says that he did not find a better place than Egypt to secure himself on himself and his family, especially since he was a professional stable in it and has a hospitality and popular love that confirms that he will remain with him for the rest of his life.

Suleiman affirms that artists and intellectuals should not leave their peoples, and to record their presence in historical situations because they have influence, and he says that he was not next to his parents in their last days and neither of them has received, as well as confiscating all his properties.

The Syrian artist does not hide his passion for the winter and says that he has a passion for thunder. He also has a passion for cultivation and this is evident in his garden, and he imagines that he will spend his life between birds and trees.

After returning to his country after the fall of Assad, Suleiman says that he started a new chapter of his life he was not expected to reach, but he came to start a new session in the history of Syrian art and culture.
