Assault on Doctors Without Borders team in Khartoum.. “They beat them and stole their vehicle”

The relief organization Doctors Without Borders said in a statement on Friday that its team in Khartoum was “violently attacked” and one of its vehicles was stolen by a group of gunmen.

The organization published on the “Twitter” platform that a team of 18 of its members “was violently attacked Thursday by a group of armed men who beat and flogged them.”

The organization also added: “They arrested one of our drivers and threatened his life before releasing him. They also stole one of our cars,” explaining that the accident occurred when the team transported medical supplies from the organization’s warehouses to the Turkish Hospital.

The team was intercepted, according to the organization’s statement, 700 meters from the hospital, which is one of only two operating hospitals in southern Khartoum with the support of the NGO.

Doctors Without Borders warned that as a result of this attack, “our presence in the Turkish hospital may not continue.”

The battles continue

The incident took place, while the battles, which entered their fourth month, continued in various regions, most notably the capital and the Darfur region in the west of the country, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo.

Residents in the south of the capital told AFP that warplanes carried out “heavy bombardment of Rapid Support sites around the Sports City, and in the neighborhoods south of the Armored Corps.”

Others pointed out that the army “bombed the areas of Soba, east of the Nile,” and witnesses from the north of Omdurman, a suburb west of Greater Khartoum, reported that “heavy artillery and rocket shells were fired towards the Bahri area, north and south of the capital.”

Outside the capital, witnesses from the city of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in the south of the country, reported “an exchange of artillery shelling between the army and the Rapid Support Forces around the city,” which has a strategic location on the road linking Darfur to the capital, as well as the presence of the country’s third largest airport.

Since its outbreak on April 15, the war between the two military leaders has resulted in the death of at least three thousand people and the displacement of more than three million people, whether inside or outside the country.

Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world, and more than half of its population now needs help to survive, at a time when the famine alert is at its highest and more than two-thirds of hospitals are out of service.
