Election 2024 live: Biden, Harris to meet separately with Netanyahu at fragile moment in US/Israel relationship

US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are beginning their meeting in the Oval Office with a pool spray.

Days after President Joe Biden announced his historic decision to withdraw from the 2024 race, it’s all eyes on Vice President Kamala Harris, who quickly emerged as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Though Harris has spent the last four years in the White House, her role as VP has largely centered around supporting the Biden administration’s initiatives. As she hits the campaign trail to raise cash and shore up support, the vice president will now have to present her vision of the US to potential voters, revealing how a Harris administration would handle key policies and issues.

While much remains unknown about Harris’s potential platform — and how it will differ from her predecessor’s — here is what we know about her take on several key policy issues.

While the president sat at his desk speaking to the American people, photos of the Bidens throughout the years sat on a narrow desk behind him – a reminder of Biden’s love and dedication to his family. His real-life relatives were also there, just off camera, listening as the 81-year-old detailed why he had ended his campaign.

First Lady Jill Biden has begun three days of events as head of the US delegation to the Summer Olympics in Paris with an event at the US ambassador’s residence celebrating the families of Team USA.

Dr Biden spoke for just under six minutes, and praised the love and commitment of athletes’ families; she also stressed the unifying power of teamwork, with thematic echoes of President Joe Biden’s speech last night.

“When Team USA glides through the Opening Ceremony tomorrow night, they carry more than just our flag. They carry our nation’s heart and our hopes with them, too. They show the world who we are as Americans: determined, optimistic and resilient. That our strength is found not only in our strides and swings but in our hearts and in our minds. That — with all our precious differences and infinite similarities — we are always one team. It’s what I love about our country: that we are united, and together we can reach for every possibility. President Biden has led our country with that hope always in his heart. As he says — “

And here the guests broke into applause. The First Lady looked grateful and perhaps wistful.

“Thank you,” she continued. “I’ll take that home to him. And as he says: There is nothing America can’t do when we do it together. And we see that especially now, at the Olympics. In this moment we are more than our cities or states or backgrounds. We are more than our jobs or our political parties. We are all, first and foremost, Team USA.” She enunciated U-S-A, and the guests cheered.

Warning that America is in the midst of a “fight for our most fundamental freedoms,” Vice President Kamala Harris challenged a group of education and labor activists to join her against Republican “extremists” as she campaigns to deny Donald Trump a second term in the White House.
