Details of the “huge” contract between Barcelona and Nike | sports


The Spanish club Barcelona revealed the details of its new contract with Nike, a sporting goods company, which has been classified as “the best contract in the history of football.”

The Barcelona General Assembly approved the new contract with Nike after 419 members voted in favor, compared to 27 who voted in rejection, while the empty votes amounted to 22 votes.

The financial value of the contract amounted to 1.7 billion euros, in addition to 158 million as a signing bonus, according to what the Spanish newspaper “AS” reported, noting that the contract extends until 2038.

Barcelona treasurer Ferran Ulivi explained that the new contract will enable the club to solve the licensing crisis, in addition to that the development of the company (BLM), which was launched by the club during the era of former president Josep Maria Battomeu in 2016 to issue licenses and promote the club’s products, will accelerate significantly.

Among the most prominent provisions of the new contract between Barcelona and Nike are:

  • Rewards for the first team for titles, and there will be no financial penalties for not winning them.
  • Title rewards will be equal for men and women.
  • Nike reserves the option to hold exclusive sponsorships with women’s teams.
  • Creating a joint brand between Barcelona and Nike.

Regarding the last point, Olivi said, “We will have our own rights to create our own single brand, and at the same time we will cooperate together to grow the existing brands.”

This agreement allows Barcelona to regain full control of its global retail and e-commerce operations and open new stores, and this will help the club to grow economically.

On the other hand, Nike will have many privileges, the most important of which is permanent appearance on sponsorship and advertising boards inside the Barcelona stadium, on the bench, and in the Sports City as well. It will also have the right to reach the club’s athletes and conduct interviews with them.

The company will have a permanent presence in the VIP areas and participate in the club’s digital assets. Nike will also give its name to one of the new luxury rooms at the Camp Nou stadium, in addition to obtaining a distinctive space for advertising and promotion.

Olivi stated, “Nike will support retail operations, e-commerce and global supply. This will help BLM grow amazingly, knowing that the company has revenues of up to 110 million and sometimes up to 150 million. This is great news for Barcelona.”

AS newspaper commented on the contract by saying, “It is the best in history, the best owned by any football club in the world, not only in terms of value but also because of the growth and development that it will witness in the coming years.”
