The repercussions of the imposition of full Israeli sovereignty in the West Bank on Jordan policy

Oman- Distinguished Jordanian figures expressed their categorical rejection of the Israeli Knesset’s decision calling for the imposition of sovereignty on the area of the Jordan Valley and the occupied West Bank, considering that it represents a flagrant violation of international law, the Wadi Araba peace agreement, a direct threat to Jordanian national security, and the rights of the Palestinian people.

She emphasized that the official and popular Jordanian response must rise to the level of threat, and that Amman will not accept any unilateral change on the ground that affects the borders of Jordan, its sovereignty, and its regional role, especially with regard to the Palestinian issue and the guardianship of sanctities in Jerusalem.

Yesterday, the Knesset approved a draft resolution calling for full sovereignty of the occupation on the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, with a majority of 71 deputies out of 120.

In turn, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry condemned – in a statement – the vote and considered it as a “flagrant violation of international law, and a clear undermining of the two -state solution and the Palestinian people’s right to embody their sovereign independent state on June 4, 1967 and its capital occupied Jerusalem.”

Dangerous repercussions

Although the decision is not binding on the Israeli government, its symbolism – according to observers – lies in being a new indication of the intention of Israeli policy towards devoting the occupation, which raises a number of serious repercussions, especially on Jordan, which is linked geographically, demographically, historically and security in these areas.

The military expert, retired Major General Mamoun Abu Nawar, saw that what is currently happening from unilateral Israeli steps is not the result of the moment, but rather an extension of a policy that started since the Oslo agreement in 1993.

He added to Al -Jazeera Net that the decision confirms that Israel has since systematically worked to reinforced the West Bank through insulation and siege procedures, within the framework of an unannounced war on the Palestinian people.

According to him, the Israeli doctrine is based on the principle that “power is the right”, and that the periods of peace are only a preparatory stage for coming wars, adding that its intention has become clear and announced, and that what happened in the Knesset constitutes a direct and dangerous threat to Jordan and its national security.

Stressing that the Kingdom has a deliberate and ready -made defensive strategy to deal with any developments, and that any actual implementation of the annexation plans will lead to a comprehensive chaos in the West Bank that takes a religious and ethnic character, which threatens to turn it into the yard of an internal civil conflict, and it may exceed the influence of that Israel to threaten the stability of the entire region.

For his part, Parliament, Saleh Al -Armouti, stressed that Jordan is the largest affected by the Knesset’s decision, and he explained that the decision violates the provisions of the Wadi Araba agreement in principle, and removes Jordanian guardianship from the sanctities in Jerusalem.

Al -Armouti pointed out that the Knesset had voted in 1980 a decision similar to the inclusion of Jerusalem, and at the time the UN Security Council in its decision No. 478, which confirmed the lack of recognition of the annexation and considered it contrary to international law, indicating that the current step also violates international agreements, and is considered a dangerous precedent.

Al -Armouti denounced the Arab and Islamic silence towards the Knesset’s vote on the decision to include the West Bank, noting that what is going on is an extension of the announcement of the “Jewish state”, which was a prelude to the expulsion of the Palestinian people and the denial of the presence of non -Jews on the land of Palestine.

He called on the Jordanian government to take firm steps, on top of which is the severing of relations with the Israeli occupation, and a complaint with the International Court of Justice regarding Israeli legislation that damages the Arab and Islamic nation, and affects the entire Palestinian issue.

Old ambitions

For his part, international law expert Anis Qassem said that this vote cannot be seen as just a symbolic step, but rather a early political message addressed to Jordan and the entire region.

He added to Al -Jazeera Net that Israel is heading towards stabilizing the “legal” annex, bypassing military control, leading to the imposition of full sovereignty on the lands of the West Bank, and the application of its legal system on it, in an attempt to turn the occupation into a legally legitimate reality.

The danger of the Israeli decision does not lie only in the legal direction – according to Qasim – but rather in the implicit message it carries, which may be read as a prelude to the possibility of deporting the Palestinian population – partly or in whole – towards Jordan, in the context of reshaping the demographic reality of the West Bank, which requires urgent political and diplomatic vigilance.

He explained that the Knesset’s decision does not carry the status of legal obligation yet and is not considered effective legislation, but it represents a prelude to the issuance of a binding law in the near future, and continued, “The decision comes in a context related to the law of nationalism that was approved in 2018, which included the occupied Palestinian territories within the concept of the Jewish state, but it has not been actually applied until now.”

A dangerous escalation

The Secretary -General of the Jordanian Life Party, Zahir Amr, also considered that what the occupation authorities are doing today in the West Bank is an unprecedented escalation, and added to Al -Jazeera Net that Israeli practices reveal an increasing feeling among the occupation that it has the resolution without deterrence or accountability, noting that the resistance in Gaza is “the only party that still stands steadily in the face of these aggressive practices.”

He stressed that the Israeli narrative, which has always sought to justify its policies has been collapsed, as the occupation crimes have become widely documented and exposed, noting: “However, the official Arab silence still constitutes the weakest link, and gives the occupation more space to proceed with its plans.”

Regarding the Kingdom’s position, Amr stressed that the Jordanian situation has its own dimensions. There are challenges related to the border, which is a responsibility that no party can deal with except Jordan itself, and the occupation is aware of its need for it, which makes the scenario of mass displacement of the Palestinians towards Jordan away from verification. Considering, “We are living today a detailed moment, in which the signs of breaking the thorn of the occupation are waving, and the defeat is possible and is closer than ever.”

The Jordan Valley represents a strategic depth of Jordan from the western side, as it constitutes a sensitive border tape that separates the West Bank and the Jordanian lands, while Amman rejects any unilateral steps from the Israeli side to impose its sovereignty on this region, which in practice means converting the eastern borders of occupied Palestine into permanent borders of the occupation entity, which constitutes a direct threat to Jordanian national security.
