Most respondents revealed that the issue would not affect the likelihood of voting for Biden next year when he seeks re-election.
Reuters/Ipsos, which has credible polls and a measure of accuracy of about 4 percentage points, surveyed 1,004 US adults across the country.
Admission of guilt
In turn, US Attorney General David Weiss, who was appointed by former Republican President Donald Trump, said on Tuesday that Hunter Biden, 53, had agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanors of willful failure to pay income taxes and to enter into an avoidable agreement and conviction on a gun-related charge.
Trump and his Republican allies have charged that the plea agreement amounted to special treatment for Biden’s son.
Weiss was one of the few prosecutors appointed by Trump and asked by Biden to remain in their positions after taking office in January 2021, to avoid the appearance of tampering in politically sensitive investigations.
$1.5 million taxable income
According to court filings, Hunter Biden received taxable income of more than $1.5 million in 2017 and 2018, but did not pay income tax in those years despite being owed more than $100,000.
He is also accused of illegal possession of a firearm from approximately October 12-23, 2018, when he was using and addicted to a controlled substance.
For this charge, a pre-trial agreement was concluded, an alternative to trial sometimes used to allow defendants to avoid a prison sentence or criminal conviction.
