The most famous environmental activist is accused of defying the police…and may go to jail


The Swedish judiciary announced, on Wednesday, that it had directed Mr Climate activist Greta Thunberg Charged with “refusing to obey” police orders during her participation in a mid-June protest in the southern city of Malmö.

“The public prosecutor has brought charges against a young woman who participated on June 19 in a climate demonstration that disrupted traffic in Malmö. The young woman refused to obey orders from the police, who asked her to leave the site,” the Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

The office confirmed to “Agence France Presse” that the accused is Greta Thunberg.

And in mid-June, Thunberg (20 years old), along with the “Ta Tilbaka Framtiden” organization, participated in a protest movement in the port of Malmö, during which activists closed the port’s entrance and exit.

Protesters wanted to immobilize oil tankers to protest against the use of fossil fuels.

The activist faces up to six months in prison, but public prosecutor Charlotte Ottosen told Swedish daily Sydsvenskan that the charge is usually punishable by a fine.

A hearing is scheduled to take place in Malmo court at the end of July, according to the newspaper.
