The Commander-in-Chief of the new Syrian administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, met today, Tuesday, with a delegation of senior representatives of the Christian community in the capital, Damascus, while the head of the caretaker government, Muhammad Al-Bashir, issued a decision to establish a general authority for land and sea ports.

The official news agency SANA explained that Al-Sharaa’s meeting with a delegation from the Christian community in the city of Damascus coincides with the Christian community’s celebrations of Christmas and New Year.

This coincides with assurances from private sources – to Al Jazeera – that a preparatory committee will be formed to arrange invitations and details of the sessions of the Syrian National Dialogue Conference, from which a general body will emerge to choose the transitional government and a committee to draft the constitution.

The sources explained that invitations will be sent to all representatives of Syrian society to participate in the bodies and committees that will emerge from the conference, and that discussions are continuing with the various components to represent them in the conference.

These sources revealed to Al Jazeera that the conference agenda will discuss the establishment of a general body to choose the next transitional government, whose term of office will be determined by national consensus.

The sources indicated that the next government will not be based on sectarian, religious or political quotas, but rather on competencies.

Port Authority

Today, Tuesday, the Syrian News Agency, SANA, said that Prime Minister Muhammad al-Bashir issued a decision to establish a public authority for land and sea ports that would enjoy legal personality, administrative and financial independence, and be linked to the Prime Minister.

On the other hand, Minister of Justice Shadi Al-Waisi met with a delegation from the State Litigation Department and a number of branch heads, advisors and lawyers to discuss the administration’s role in defending the state’s rights and protecting public funds, according to SANA.

Al-Waisi said – during his visit to the Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria the day before yesterday, Sunday – that there are arrangements to prepare a law in order to return what he called criminals who left Syria and prosecute those who are still inside the country.

He continued, “There is a memorandum that will be issued listing the names of the criminals who are being prosecuted,” stressing, “What we have to do now is return to the principles, which are the law, and the judiciary in Syria, God willing, will be independent.”

On December 8, the Syrian factions extended their control over the capital, Damascus, ending 61 years of rule by the Baath Party regime and 53 years of rule by the Assad family.
