Lebanese minister: Hezbollah will choose suicide if it is refused to hand over its weapon news

|

Lebanese Minister of Justice Adel Nassar said today, Sunday, that “Hezbollah” will choose suicide if it refuses to hand over its weapon, and it will not be allowed to drag the country to this fate, two days before a cabinet session dedicated to discussing the issue of restricting weapons in the hands of the state, and extending its sovereignty over its entire lands.

In a post on his account on the X platform, Nassar explained that “if Hezbollah chooses suicide by refusing to hand over its weapon, it will not be allowed to drag Lebanon and its people with it,” according to the official Lebanese Information Agency.

The minister, what is meant by his words, did not explain exactly, and what would Hezbollah face in the event of refusal to hand over its weapon?

Nassar said, at a press conference yesterday, Friday, that “a country cannot be completed under a weapon outside its authority (…), and there is no actual state in light of the presence of a weapon outside the framework of legitimacy,” as he put it.

He added that what he described as illegal weapons turned into a burden that threatens internal stability, and opens the door to security, economic and diplomatic disasters paid for all Lebanese.

And last Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam announced that the cabinet will continue during its session this week, “discussing the sovereignty of the state on all its territory with its own self -power,” in reference to the disarmament of “Hezbollah” and the restriction of arms in the hands of the state.

But on the other hand, Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qasim said, on Wednesday, in a television speech, “We will not hand over weapons for Israel (…), arms is not a priority now, but priority for reconstruction and stopping the aggression.”

On July 4, Qasim also said, “Those who demand the resistance (Hezbollah) to hand over its weapons, first demanding the departure of the aggression (Israel), it is unreasonable not to criticize the occupation, and only demand those who resist it to abandon its weapon.”

Government insistence

On Thursday, President Joseph Aoun revealed, in a speech delivered by the Ministry of Defense, that the United States submitted a set of proposals related to the exclusive weapon, and said that the American side “had offered us a set of ideas that we had made fundamental amendments that we will present to the cabinet next week.”

He added, “We demanded an immediate cessation of Israel’s attacks, the withdrawal of the latter from the occupied Lebanese territories, and the authority of the state’s authority over its entire lands, as well as withdrawing the weapon of all armed forces, including Hezbollah, and handing it over to the Lebanese army.”

And Friday, the commander of the army, General Rudolph Haykal, said that the failure of the Israeli forces to withdraw from the south is the only obstacle to the completion of the deployment of Lebanese military units in the region, according to an army statement.

These political developments come in light of the continued escalation in the south, as Israel continues to violate the ceasefire agreement in force since late November 2024.

On October 8, 2023, Israel launched an aggression against Lebanon that turned into a widespread war on September 23, 2024, which resulted in more than 4 thousand dead and about 17 thousand wounded.

On November 27, 2024, a ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel began in force, but Tel Aviv violated him more than 3 thousand times, which resulted in 262 dead and 563 wounded, according to official Lebanese data.

In a challenge to the ceasefire agreement, the Israeli army carried out a partial withdrawal from southern Lebanon, while the occupation of 5 hills controlled during the last war continues.
