Thousands of families flee violence with their children in West Darfur

The representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Sudan, Mandeep O’Brien, said today, Sunday, that thousands of families are fleeing violence. in the West Darfur region in western Sudan.

O’Brien added that UNICEF is intensifying the distribution of medicines and medical tools necessary to treat wounded and sick children in West Darfur.

The UN representative also praised the support of partners in Chad to strengthen cross-border operations.

The United Nations renewed its warning at the end of last June, of the conflict turning into an ethnic war in Darfur. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is deeply concerned about the growing humanitarian needs of people affected by the crisis in Sudan, where the number of displaced people continues to rise and aid delivery remains severely limited due to insecurity, inability to deliver and lack of funding.

“Perhaps the situation in Darfur is our greatest concern,” Raouf Mazou, Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, said from Geneva, explaining that an increasing number of refugees fleeing to Chad were “arriving with injuries.”

He also warned that “the ethnic dimension that appeared in the past is coming back.”

It is noteworthy that since the outbreak of clashes between the army led by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, on April 15 in Sudan, which is one of the poorest countries in the world, the Darfur region is witnessing an intensity of violence, after it was the scene of atrocities in the first decade of XXI century.

Several cities in West Darfur are witnessing bloody confrontations, after the armed conflict in the Darfur region between the army and the Rapid Support Forces turned into confrontations between the Arab tribes and the Masalit tribe, amid the interruption of communication networks and the Internet.
