Macron calls for an immediate halt to ceasefire violations in Lebanon news

French President Emmanuel Macron called for an immediate cessation of all “actions that violate” the ceasefire in effect between Lebanon and Israel since last Wednesday.

The Elysee Palace announced that Macron, during two phone calls with the Prime Minister of the Lebanese Caretaker Government, Najib Mikati, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nabih Berri, called on all parties to work to fully implement the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel.

Macron reiterated France’s commitment to provide its support to the Lebanese Armed Forces, whether at the national level or within the framework of the United Nations Emergency Forces (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

He also stressed “the need for all Lebanese parties to find a way out of the political crisis” that has been afflicting Lebanon for more than two years, praising the call of Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri to hold a session on January 9 to elect a president after two years of the position being vacant.

For his part, French Foreign Intelligence Chief Nicolas Lerner said that his country is working with Britain to encourage the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon to reach a similar agreement that ends the war in the Gaza Strip.

In a speech he delivered at the British Embassy in Paris, in the presence of his British counterpart, Richard Moore, Lerner confirmed that the agreement between Israel and Lebanon came after intense diplomatic efforts made by the United States and France, as he put it.

In a parallel context, the head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, said that Hezbollah, which agreed to the ceasefire agreement, must cooperate with the Lebanese army to dismantle its military structure from the area south of the Litani River.

Geagea stated that things cannot return to what they were previously under the terms of the agreement.
