United Nations: The humanitarian crisis in Sudan requires urgent support news

Fletcher said in an interview with Al Jazeera that Darfur has become “the world’s capital of human suffering,” stressing that what the world has offered so far is insufficient to end the crisis.

Fletcher warned of the continuation of crimes and violations against civilians in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, and Sudan in general, including the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.

He called on the international community to hold accountable those responsible for these violations and to end practices that threaten the lives of the civilian population.

Fletcher explained that the situation requires rehabilitating and securing the roads used by displaced people to escape conflict areas in El Fasher and neighboring areas, explaining that the current roads are “extremely dangerous” and need improvements to facilitate the arrival of humanitarian aid and provide protection for civilians.

The role of international media in Sudan’s humanitarian crisis

Fletcher stressed the need to unify media efforts in covering the humanitarian crisis, warning that scattered coverage on social media distracts the public’s attention instead of unifying it.

He called for allowing international journalists to cover the crisis directly to ensure that those responsible for violations are held accountable.

Fletcher also praised the role played by Massad Boulos, chief advisor for Arab and African affairs to US President Donald Trump, in supporting efforts to reach a humanitarian truce, noting the importance of cooperation with other international parties. He called on the Security Council and the international community to engage effectively to end the protracted conflict in Sudan and ensure the protection of civilians.

Lack of funding hampers humanitarian aid efforts

The UN official revealed a severe lack of funding for international organizations as a result of cutting about 40 to 45% of the UN budget during the past year, which negatively affected the prioritization of support and aid.

Fletcher called on international organizations to increase their support to meet the needs of those affected in Sudan and other conflict areas around the world.
