Michael Mosley – latest updates: ‘No trace’ of TV doctor who went missing while hiking on Greek island of Symi

Mosley has four children with his wife Clare Bailey Mosley, also a doctor, author and health columnist, who wrote the recipe book Fast 800 Easy.

The couple, who have hosted theatre show tours together, recently attended the Hay Festival where Mosley presented a special edition of his Radio 4 series and podcast Just One Thing.

He was reportedly on holiday with his wife after completing their nationwide tour called ‘Eat well, sleep better, live longer’.

Senior Police Spokesman Constantina Dimoglidou told the Daily Mail that ongoing searches that began early this morning have yet to yield any find.

“He was at the beach of Ag. Nikolas with another couple when he decided to go back to his home in the area of Pedi of Symi. It was around 1.30pm and he forgot his phone at the beach. Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result.

“We have now asked the fire brigade to assist in the operation in the case that he may have slipped, tripped, fallen, even bitten by a snake, remaining injured somewhere.’

“There is just no trace of him. None whatsoever and that means that for us at least, every potential scenario is open and being investigated.”

Before turning to the health sector, Mosley became a banker in London following an undergraduate degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at the New College, Oxford.

After two years in banking, he moved into medicine and studied medical psychology at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School, where he qualified as a doctor.

Mosley subsequently became disillusioned with psychiatry and segwayed into television when he joined the BBC’s trainee assistant producer scheme.

For the past 25 years, he has been working as a documentary maker and science journalist. Currently, he hosts the Just One Thing podcast for the BBC and makes regular appearances on programmes like This Morning and The One Show.

Friends and fellow presenters and TV journalists have started to share their concerns for the missing medic, after it emerged he had disappeared on the Greek island of Symi.

Science writer Malcolm Clark wrote on social media site X: “So sorry to hear this. Michael is one of the nicest and smartest people in television and was a joy to work with. Hope rescuers find him soon.”

Money expert Martin Lewis added: “Feeling disturbed about the news about Dr Michael Mosley. I hope he’s ok.”

Addressing his disappearance on GB News, Julia Hartley-Brewer told viewers: “He has gone missing on a Greek island. Lovely, lovely, lovely man. [It’s] very, very worrying.”

In his last post on social media, just hours before he went missing, the medic promoted his BBC Radio 4 show Just One Thing.

Taking to Instagram, he said: “If time is tight, what’s the one thing that you should be doing to improve your health and wellbeing?

“In my Just One Thing series with BBC Radio 4, I explore the surprisingly simple top tips that are scientifically proven to change your life.”

The MailOnline reports that emergency services were focusing on the area of the path between the beach in Ayios Nikolaos to Pedi but have since expanded their search due to the amount of time lapsed.

“Right now there are four police, eight firemen, a drone and seven volunteers involved in the operation,” a senior police source told them.

A community Facebook group on Symi appealed for information and uploaded a picture of Dr Mosley in shorts, a blue polo shirt, baseball cap and sunglasses.

The post read: “Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick’s at about 13.30 and failed to make it home.

“His friends are concerned as it is 6 hours since they last saw him.

“His name is Dr Mike Mosley and he is a familiar face for many British people as he has appeared on the BBC.”

In an update on Thursday morning, they said a search and rescue team from Athens with sophisticated equipment was expected to arrive by 1pm local time.

The Greek island Symi is part of the Dodecanese island group off the coast of Rhodes and had a population of 2,590 in 2011.

It is known for it’s beaches and for the harbour at Symi Town and has a reputation as one of the more pictureseque islands in the region.

While there is no direction connection to the UK to Symi, tourists travel to Rhodes and are able to take the ferry.

Dr Michael Mosley is a television journalist, producer and presenter who has worked for the BBC since 1985.

He regularly makes appearances on The One Show and This Morning, and has presented programmes on medicine and biology.

He is credited for the rising popularity of the 5:2 diet for losing weight, which involves fasting for two days per week.

Mosley is also a columnist for the Daily Mail, and has made a number of films about diet and exercise among his documentaries.

The 67-year-old broadcaster did the Channel 4 show Michael Mosley: Who Made Britain Fat? and was part of the BBC series Trust Me, I’m A Doctor.

He also lived with tapeworms in his guts for six weeks for the documentary Infested! Living With Parasites on BBC Four.

Known for appearing on television programmes like This Morning and The One Show, he is said to have failed to return from a hiking excursion.

In a local Facebook group, an appeal read: “Have you seen this man? He set off to walk back from St Nick’s at about 13.30 and failed to make it home. His friends are concerned as it is 6 hours since they last saw him.

“His name is Dr Mike Mosley and he is a familiar face for many British people.”
