Washington is ignorant of the fate of its fugitive soldier and fails to communicate with North Korea
The United States announced Wednesday that it still does not have any information on The American soldier who was most likely arrested in North Korea After crossing the border on the sidelines of a tourist trip in the Demilitarized Zone.
“We continue to work with the United Nations to determine the status and whereabouts of Private Travis King,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
He added: “We continue to collect information,” while acknowledging that the United States still does not know the fate of the soldier.
He referred to contacts with South Korea and Sweden, which plays a mediating role between Washington and Pyongyang, explaining that the Pentagon has tried to communicate with the North Korean army without success so far.
This mysterious incident would further deteriorate relations between Washington and Pyongyang.
And the US military stated that Travis King, a conscript since 2021, crossed “voluntarily and without permission” the border between South and North Korea, during a visit to the demilitarized zone separating the two countries.
CBS quoted US officials as saying that the soldier was to be returned to the United States for reasons related to his behavior, but he managed to leave the airport and join a group of visitors to the demilitarized zone.
