At least 22 people are reported dead in a mass shooting across several locations in Lewiston, Maine.

Police say they are hunting for the shooter and have identified 40-year-old Robert Card as a person of interest who should be considered “armed and dangerous”.

Between 50 and 60 people were also injured in the shocking incident, according to NBC News.

There are three crime scenes, including Sparetime Recreation, Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant and the Walmart Distribution Center, reported The Sun-Journal.

“There is an active shooter in Lewiston. We ask people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at multiple locations. If you see any suspicious activity or individuals please call 911. Updates to follow,” tweeted Maine State Police.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared photos of the suspect armed with a rifle on their Facebook page.

A text sent out by Lewiston Public Schools urged anyone near or at the school for parent-teacher conferences to get in a safe place.

”We are going into lockdown. I will provide more information as it is available and appropriate,” the alert read.

Lewiston is a city of around 36,000 people about 36 miles north of Portland, Maine

Lewiston public schools closed on Thursday

Public schools in Lewiston will be closed on Thursday following the mass shooting in the Maine city.

“There remains a lot of unknowns at this time. Information moves quickly but not always accurately,” Jake Langlais, the superintendent, said in a message on the district’s website.

“Please continue to shelter in place or get to safety. We will continue to update you with information and next steps as appropriate.”

“Stay close to your loved ones. Embrace them. Our prayers go out to those who lost someone tonight,” he added.
